Humanist Civil Marriage Ceremonies

Humanist Civil Marriage Ceremonies can take place in a venue, which is approved by Derry City & Strabane District Council, e.g. a hotel.

If you are having a humanist ceremony, please check with the Humanist Celebrant that they have applied to the Registrar General in Belfast for approval to carry out your Civil Marriage Ceremony and that the Registrar in the District where your Marriage will take place has appointed the Humanist Celebrant to carry out your Ceremony.

Then, it is necessary for both parties to the Marriage to submit your Marriage Notice to the Registrar in the District where your Ceremony will take place.  The Marriage Notice forms with explanatory notes are available in the District Registration Office or can be downloaded from www.nidirect.gov.uk.

When you submit Marriage Notice and pay your marriage notice fee of £52, staff will advise when you can collect the Marriage Schedule to give to the Humanist Celebrant.

After your Wedding Day, you will arrange for the return of your Marriage Schedule so that your Marriage can be registered and your Marriage Certificate issued.
