1. 2019 Launch
So its almost the end of June Folks, not that the weather is very summery but hopefully you are all getting some miles in anyway and Sunday September 1st will come around soon enough.
Most of you will know the score by now, regular training is the key to a good run on race day and if you are following our 12 week programme you will be starting week 3 this Monday June 24th.
Still early days so take it gentle, the miles will build up and you'll be grand come race day!!
We expect to accept 2000 full distance runners and 100 Relay teams of 3 so you'll have lots of company as you meander along both sides of the Foyle from Ebrington to the St Columbs Park track finish. That's a lot of runners, all abilities and all shapes and sizes and a testament to the enduring popularity of the WHM.
Maybe you saw the recent promo pic of the 4 Derry area male winners from 1983, 1984, 1985 and 2013. Only 4 local men led home the field in the 37 editions of the race--- Brian Mitchell, Paul Craig, Gerry Craig and Keith Shields---take a bow!!
Can we hope for another local male winner any time soon? We have the talent here to take on all comers so here's hoping for 2019.
Catherine Whoriskey of course did the treble in 2015, 2016 and 2017 to stamp her mark on the female winners list and she is back in competitive action again recently. Who knows, maybe she will be on the September 1st start line to keep the local flag flying at the sharp end of the female race again.
Fancy a local 5K this week? The Culmore Festival 5K is all set for this Thursday 27th June at 7 30pm in the Culmore District Park on the Coney Road, the back road to Muff. Entries taken on the course in the Park from circa 5 30pm and there is also a 1K Kidz Run with medals for all finishers at 7 15pm.
The District Park is on the site of the former Council Landfill site and is a beautiful example of an urban park with fantastic and bracing views of the Foyle , Benevenagh and Donegal.
Maybe see you there for a cup of tea post race in the refreshment tent!!
