Setting up a Food Business

It is a legal requirement for all food business establishments to be registered  with the Environmental Health Department.  

If you are planning to start a new catering business, you must register your premises with the Environmental Health Department at your local authority at least 28 days before opening and they can provide advice and guidance and arrange visits if necessary.

This applies to all types of food businesses including catering businesses run from home and mobile or temporary premises such as stalls and vans.  If you use two or more premises you will need to register all of them.

Registration is FREE of charge.  

Once registered, it is not necessary to re-register unless there is a significant change in the business (such as name change or change of food business operator).

Setting up a food business can be a daunting task with a wide range of legislation that must be complied with if you are not to fall foul of the law.

When you are choosing a premises for your business it is very important to make sure that they comply with the necessary regulations, are suitable for the purpose of your business and allow you to prepare food safely.

When you are choosing a new premises or making changes it is always good practice to contact the Environmental Health Department for advice and guidance.

If your business makes, prepares or handles food of animal origin for supply to other businesses, then in most circumstances you will require approval from us. All products produced in an Approved premises must display a Health Mark or be accompanied by an appropriate Health Certificate.
