Fuel Poverty

Fuel Poverty is the term used to describe the situation whereby a household is required to spend more than 10% of their income on household fuel bills.

Delivered by Strabane Community Project the Fuel Stamp Scheme helps householders save for home heating oil, by spreading the cost of their fuel.

Housing Executive Boiler Replacement Allowance

Based on income and owning your own home, the Housing Executive can offer a Boiler Replacement Allowance, which aims to help with the cost of replacing your old, inefficient boiler that is over 15 years old.

Oil Buying Club Scheme

The Oil Buying Club Scheme was established and is managed by Bryson Energy.  By coordinating orders for domestic heating oil in an area the clubs are able to negotiate discounts with the oil suppliers by buying in bulk.  As part of the scheme 27 oil buying clubs have been established regionally however unfortunately the oil clubs are now closed to new members.

Each grant included in the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme has its own eligibility criteria and applicants need to refer to the criteria and the scheme manager for information on making an application. 

Winter Fuel Payment

If you are aged 60 or over you may get a Winter Fuel Payment to help pay for keeping warm in winter.  The Winter Fuel Payment is tax free and paid yearly to eligible older people.

Cold Weather Payment

If you're receiving certain benefits, you could qualify for extra money for each week there is very cold weather in your area.

The Public Health Agency has provided Derry City and Strabane District Council with a number of Keep Warm Packs that can be provided to vulnerable persons to help them keep warm over the winter period.  As appropriate and subject to criteria and availability the Council’s Home Safety and Affordable Warmth Teams will provide the packs to householders most in need and at risk of fuel poverty.
