Sale of tobacco products

We enforce a variety of laws that control the sale of tobacco products.

Tobacco Retailers Act (Northern Ireland) 2014

The Tobacco Retailers Act (Northern Ireland) 2014, which came into effect on 6 April 2016, requires tobacco retailers across Northern Ireland to join the Tobacco Register NI.

Retailers will have until 1 July 2016 to register, after which it will be illegal for them to sell tobacco products if they are not registered to do so.

Registration

Retailers can register online or by submitting a paper registration form. It is free to register.

Online registration is quick and easy. Simply visit www.tobaccoregisterni.gov.uk and follow the online instructions.

Paper registration forms are available for download from the Tobacco Register NI website or on request from Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environmental Health Section.
