The public are reminded that they must continue to adhere to the guidelines regarding social distancing and co-operate fully with Council staff at all times. It is important to note that when funerals are taking place, some areas within the cemeteries will be cordoned off to ensure health and safety measures are in place and to allow mourners the space and privacy to grieve and pay their respects in a safe and controlled environment.
The public are also advised that as a result of the current pandemic these arrangements are subject to change and there will be instances where the facilities may have to close at short notice to comply with COVID 19 regulations. The cemetery offices will remain closed with no public access however all enquiries or queries regarding geneaology or headstone permits can be made by telephone at 028 71 362615 or email. Offices serving local cemeteries will remain closed to the public. Any queries can be directed via phone or email to the contacts below.
A number of restrictions are in place to safeguard both staff and the public and to reduce the risk of COVID19. Undertakers are advised to contact the relevant Cemetery office in advance of funerals to make arrangements.
The latest guidance for undertakers regarding social distancing and funerals can be found here.
City Cemetery Extension at Kildrum Gardens
Online Public Information Session
7pm 13 January 2021
Derry City and Strabane District Council are looking at a number of options to extend burial capacity within the Derry City area; one of the options being taken forward by Council is to extend the existing City Cemetery onto the wooded lands at Southway, south of Kildrum Gardens.
The proposed scheme is seen as critical to extending the short term burial capacity within the City Cemetery and will also help facilitate Council with the transition from the existing City Cemetery to a new strategic greenfield cemetery facility elsewhere within the Council area.
What is the proposed scheme?
The proposal will allow Council to increase the capacity of the existing City Cemetery by circa 1,000 plots, which will increase the lifespan of the existing site for new openings by approximately 5 years. As well as this, Council intend to purchase a large proportion of the remaining Woodland Trust site at Southway and develop a Biodiversity Management Plan which will enhance the existing wildlife, flora and fauna within the area.
The current estimated costs of the works is £1.4 million.
Our plans include:
- New circa 1,000 plot site
- Compensatory planting to encourage use of site by Red Squirrels
- New access road to the existing cemetery from Southway
- Biodiversity Management Plan for the existing Woodland Trust Site.
- Benches and seating areas.
