Cemeteries

Cemetery Services

All Derry City and Strabane District Council owned cemeteries are open and operational from 8am to 7pm
daily and will close at 4.30pm from Sunday October 25th when the clocks go back.  The public are reminded that they must continue to adhere to the guidelines regarding social distancing and co-operate fully with Council staff at all times. It is important to note that when funerals are taking place, some areas within the cemeteries will be cordoned off to ensure health and safety measures are in place and to allow mourners the space and privacy to grieve and pay their respects in a safe and controlled environment.  The public are also advised that as a result of the current pandemic these arrangements are subject to change and there will be instances where the facilities may have to close at short notice to comply with COVID 19 regulations. The cemetery offices will remain closed with no public access however all enquiries or queries regarding geneaology or headstone permits can be made by telephone at 028 71 362615 or email.

Currently cemeteries remain open to the public daily from 2.30pm to 8.30pm and are not accessible in the mornings to allow for funerals to take place and to facilitate necessary maintenance works.
The Council has put in place these temporary measures to ensure cemeteries are open in compliance with Government regulations to facilitate funerals and social distancing measures to protect the public and staff.

At the City Cemetery, a number of additional temporary measures are in place including a one-way system to ensure that those visiting are able to socially distance and some restrictions with regard to the maximum number of people who are in the cemetery at any one time.

Visitors to the Cemeteries are reminded that they must adhere to social distancing guidelines and respect the needs of everyone who wants to visit as Council is not able to facilitate high numbers of visitors at the same time.

Social distancing and operational changes are also in place at other cemeteries across the Council area including Ballyoan, Altnagelvin, Strabane, Mountcastle and Castlederg.

Signage is erected across all sites reminding people of the temporary changes that are in place to protect them and guidance and assistance will also be available where necessary. The Council is reviewing all these measures on a regular basis.

Members of the public with any enquiries are advised to contact the Cemetery office via telephone at 028 71 362615.The public are advised that should contact be required social distancing requirements must be maintained at all times.

Offices serving local cemeteries will remain closed to the public over the coming weeks. Any queries can be directed via phone or email to the contacts below.
