Centenary

Decade of Centenaries – the Centenary of the Creation of Northern Ireland

On May 3rd 2021 a century will have passed since the state of Northern Ireland became a separate legal entity under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, following the partition of Ireland. This is the latest landmark event to feature in the Decade of Centenaries Programme which has been marking a series of 100th anniversary milestones spanning the historically significant period from 1912 – 1922.

The programme aims to explore and promote understanding of the diverse narratives of the time and to facilitate the dignified celebration of these events today in keeping with the principles of ethical remembrance. The Decade of Centenaries provides a fantastic platform for all communities to tell their stories and create a shared history for our society that everyone can relate to. The Centenary event itself offers a real opportunity to promote Northern Ireland from a positive perspective – through its culture, arts, literature and sport.

Grant support has been made available by Council for any eligible local groups who wish to mark these historic occasions, and a wide array of community focused events and activities will take place in the coming months.
You can find out more about all the events marking the creation of Northern Ireland, which will be held on online platforms or at outdoor locations in keeping with the current restrictions.

Upcoming events will be listed on this page in the coming weeks.
