Limited places remaining for Mayor McHugh’s MAYOR-ROX Hyrox Simulation event
1 May 2026
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, is encouraging people to sign up quickly for the district’s first ever Hyrox simulation event before it sells out.
With only around 100 places remaining, the Mayor is urging fitness enthusiasts and community members to secure their spot at MAYOR-ROX, which takes place at Melvin Sports Complex in Strabane on Saturday May 30th.
Mayor McHugh attended last weekend’s Ebrington Hyrox event in Derry where many participants availed of the chance to sign up for his event at a registration desk in the square.
He is promising participants an adrenaline fuelled high-energy fitness challenge at the newly extended Melvin while raising funds for his chosen charities – PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland Charity and the Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund.
Hyrox is an indoor fitness competition that combines running and functional workout stations and is one of the fastest growing sports globally, known for its accessibility and ability to test endurance, strength and stamina.
Mayor McHugh said he was heartened by the strong interest in his event.
“I’m delighted with the response so far to MAYOR-ROX and it’s fantastic to see so many people already signed up,” he said.
“What struck me at the Ebrington Hyrox is that this is a sport for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned competitor or taking part in your first fitness challenge, and the atmosphere created at the events is electric.
“With only around 100 places left, I would encourage anyone thinking about taking part to register now and avoid missing out.”
MAYOR-ROX is an all-day event where competitors will be chip timed and compete across a range of categories, with awards for category winners. All participants will also receive a commemorative event t-shirt.
Participants can register as individuals or as part of two or four-person relay teams, while a Half-Rox option is also available for those not ready for the full distance.
There is a minimum donation of £50 to take part, with participants encouraged to raise additional sponsorship in support of the Mayor’s charities.
Registration is available now at www.derrystrabane.com/mayorrox.
The PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland Charity provides essential support to individuals, families and communities affected by suicide, self-harm or poor mental health, while the Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund delivers vital assistance to those living with chronic or terminal illness and their families.
