Death and Stillborn Registration

Death and Stillborn Registration

Legislation has been implemented to allow death registrations to be carried out without family attending the Registration office.

Family need to complete the Death Registration GRO73 form  and scan or photograph the completed form to [email protected].  You do not need to visit the office as the Registrar will get in touch by phone when they have received the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, Coroner’s Report or Stillbirth Certificate to confirm details of your loved one.

You can then advise how many Death Certificates you need, there is a fee of £8 for each one.  Staff can collect the payment by card over the phone and post the official Death Certificate to you.

We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your loved one. During this time staff would like to thank you for your understanding as it will take a little longer to look after families.

Birth and Death Registration of a baby

For parents whose little baby has sadly passed away shortly after birth, please ring the registrar on 02871376520 and select the appropiate prompt at the automated message.

Alternatively email [email protected] or call 02871 253253.

By law all deaths occurring in Northern Ireland must be registered.

If you have recently been bereaved, you will need to register the death of your loved one.

A death should be registered as soon as possible to allow funeral arrangements to proceed, but no later than five days from the date of death, except where the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

The staff at Derry City and Strabane District Council Registration Offices will help to assist you with all aspects of the death registration at this very difficult time.
