Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions for Waterside Half Marathon

Sunday 7th September 2025

As 3,800 runners and hundreds of spectators prepare for the Waterside Half Marathon on Sunday 7th September, race organisers Derry City and Strabane District Council are advising motorists and pedestrians to familiarise themselves with the traffic and travel arrangements in place.

The race starts at 9.30am from Ebrington Square and runners will finish there between 10.40am and 1.00pm. To ensure the safety of everyone attending, and to minimise inconvenience for other road users, a number of temporary traffic restrictions and speed limits will be in place for a short time.

The route travels across the city’s bridges, along the Limavady Road, Clooney Road, Foyle Bridge, Culmore Road, Bay Road Park, Strand Road, Queen’s Quay and the Foyle Embankment, as well as extensive sections of the Council’s greenway network. Some disruption is inevitable but it will be short-lived, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

To minimise disruption, please consider:

  • Avoid travelling along the affected route during the event.

  • If you must travel, follow diversions, allow extra time, and follow the advice of police and marshals.

  • Residents along the route are asked to park vehicles off-road where possible.

  • Greenway users (especially with dogs) should avoid peak race times (9.30am – 1pm).

  • The Peace Bridge will be closed to pedestrians from 9.00am – 1.00pm (runners can still cross).

  • Churchgoers and rail passengers (9.38am train to Belfast) should allow extra time.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you in advance for your cooperation.
