A fortnight of fun left to enjoy Heritage Month

With just two weeks remaining, people are being encouraged to make the most of the vibrant programme of events still to come as part of Walled City Alive Heritage Month.
Celebrating Derry’s rich history and cultural heritage, highlights include a wide range of exhibitions, tours, workshops and family-friendly activities taking place across the city’s historic venues and landmarks.
From immersive exhibitions such as Christopher Steenson’s ‘All I see is the Present’ Exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Art starting June 20th, A Story About Us’ at the Verbal Arts Centre, ‘A History of Internment in Ireland’ at the Museum of Free Derry, and the ‘De Valera in Derry’ exhibition at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, to the colourful Patchwork Quilt Exhibition at First Derry Presbyterian Church, there are daily opportunities to explore the stories that have shaped the city.
Visitors can also enjoy guided experiences including tours of the beautiful Guildhall, the ever-popular Derry Girls Experience at the Tower Museum, and the Medieval Pilgrim Path walking tours, providing unique insights into Derry’s past and present. Or why not take in the wonderful natural surroundings of St Columb’s Park, at the Summer Solstice Garden Party hosted by St. Columb’s Park House?
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, said the programme continues to showcase the very best of the city. “Walled City Alive Heritage Month is a fantastic opportunity for people to reconnect with our city’s remarkable history and to celebrate the richness of our cultural identity. With two weeks still to go, I would encourage everyone to take time to explore the exhibitions, join a guided tour, or attend one of the many events taking place across our historic venues. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy.”
Jennifer O’Donnell, Council’s Head of Tourism, said the programme provides an ideal platform to explore Derry’s heritage offering. “Heritage Month highlights the breadth and diversity of our cultural and heritage attractions, encouraging both residents and visitors to step inside our venues and discover the stories behind them. Whether you’re interested in history, arts, crafts or music, the remaining events offer a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the city and experience its vibrant heritage first-hand.”
The Walled City Alive programme is supported by The Honourable The Irish Society with activities taking place daily across a range of venues, from museums and churches to outdoor spaces along the historic Walls.
