Bin collections to continue as normal over the Easter Holidays

Derry City and Strabane District Council has issued details of its service provision over the Easter break, advising the public that bin collection services will operate as normal throughout the holiday period.

Bin collections will take place as scheduled on Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), and Tuesday (7 April). The public is encouraged to use the appropriate bins and to recycle or reuse as much Easter packaging as possible.

Recycling Centres will be closed on Easter Sunday (5 April) and Easter Monday (6 April), reopening as normal on Tuesday 7 April.

The Guildhall and the Tower Museum will be closed on Easter Sunday only and will reopen to visitors as normal from Easter Monday.

Council offices on Strand Road, Derry, will be closed on Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), and Tuesday (7 April). The Derry Road offices in Strabane will be closed on Easter Monday (6 April) and Tuesday (7 April).

Registry Offices in Derry will be closed on Friday 3 April, Monday 6 April, and Tuesday 7 April. Strabane Registry Offices will remain open on Good Friday and will be closed on Easter Monday and Tuesday.

All Council-owned cemeteries will remain open and operational over the Easter period from 8am to 8pm daily.

An Out of Hours Service will continue to be available for ongoing dog attacks on persons or animals over the Easter break. This service can be accessed by telephone on 07734 128096. While there is no obligation on the Council to respond to other serious matters outside normal hours, the Dog Warden may respond following an assessment of voicemail messages received.

All Council parks across the city and district, as well as the Greenways, will remain open for public use throughout the Easter holidays. Visitors are reminded to treat these areas with respect and to use the bins provided, helping to keep spaces clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

There will be some minor changes to Leisure Services, with a small number of centres closing on specific days over the holiday period. The following arrangements will be in place:

  • Foyle Arena – Open Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Tuesday. Closed Easter Sunday and Monday
  • Templemore Sports Complex – Open Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Tuesday. Closed Easter Sunday and Monday
  • Melvin Sports Complex – Open Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Sunday. Closed Easter Monday and Tuesday
  • Derg Valley Leisure Centre – Open Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Sunday. Closed Easter Monday and Tuesday
  • Riversdale Leisure Centre – Open Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Sunday. Closed Easter Monday and Tuesday
  • City Baths, Brooke Park, Bishop’s Field and Waterside Shared Village - Closed Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Open Easter Saturday

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, extended best wishes to the public for the bank holiday period and encouraged everyone to familiarise themselves with full-service details.

“I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter break. I also encourage residents to make good use of their Blue and Brown bins when disposing of all those Easter treats and the packaging that comes along with them.

“Easter is a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy everything our city and district have to offer. I would encourage everyone to make the most of our parks and green spaces during the spring season.”
