Council issues call out for mural artist opportunity for Strabane Town of Culture bid

Derry City and Strabane District Council is inviting proposals from experienced mural artists to deliver a Strabane People’s Gallery Artist in Residence Project. This exciting initiative is a key stepping stone in Strabane’s official bid to become the UK Town of Culture in 2028.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is inviting proposals from experienced mural artists to deliver a Strabane People’s Gallery Artist in Residence Project. This exciting initiative is a key stepping stone in Strabane’s official bid to become the UK Town of Culture in 2028.
The successful artist will collaborate closely with local communities and stakeholders to design and install a minimum of five public murals across the town, celebrating Strabane’s rich heritage, identity, and stories.
Supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Strabane Public Realm Project, the commission carries a total project budget of up to £20,000, aimed at driving place-making, boosting civic pride, and leaving a lasting public art legacy that is crafted by and for the people of Strabane.
A key element of this project is that its developed at grassroots level with local communities actively involved in the vision. John Kerr is the Arts and Culture Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council said: “This is a community-led bid in every sense, and we want to hear directly from local artists. We are looking for creative talent to help bring the unique stories and identity of Strabane to life on our walls, ensuring our community is at the heart of our journey toward the 2028 Town of Culture ambitions."
Encouraging artists to apply he explained that the Artist in Residence for the Strabane People’s Gallery project will see the delivery of at least five public murals across Strabane and comes with a budget of up to £20,000 thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Strabane Public Realm Project.
