Council service update

Tuesday, 06 January 2026

12.30pm

Derry City and Strabane District Council has provided an update in relation to the impact the current snow and ice weather conditions is having on its services and thanked the public for their patience and understanding.

🗑️ Household Bin Collections

In relation to bin collection services, while we had crews out and about today, Tuesday, there were some areas that were not accessible due to challenging driving conditions. We are advising the public to please leave their bins out and we will endeavour to revisit these areas over the coming days to collect bins that were missed when it is safe to do so. We are hopeful that all areas will be accessible by the end of the week and have arrangements in place for additional refuse services at the weekend.

🌹 Cemeteries

All Council cemeteries were closed this morning (Tuesday) and arrangements are in place to reopen later today when considered safe to do so. Burials will continue to be prioritised and some of our rural cemeteries are expected to be impacted until later in the week.

♻️ Recycling Centres

Some recycling centres experienced delayed opening this morning due to weather conditions however we are pleased to advise that all are open and operational, with the exception of Spamont and Park that remain closed.

🏠 Community Centres

Some community centres were closed today Tuesday due to the weather. Users are advised to contact their local centre directly for the latest information.

🌳 Parks , playgrounds and open spaces

The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when using parks and open spaces and to stay updated with weather forecasts, particularly if travelling.

🏟️⚽Grass pitches and outdoor sports facilities

These are expected to be open later today.
