Council to Host ‘Nappuccino’ Event During National Recycle Week to Promote Reusable Baby Products

16 September 2025

As part of Recycle Week 2025, Derry City and Strabane District Council will host a special ‘Nappuccino’ morning to raise awareness about the environmental and financial benefits of reusable nappies, wipes, and sanitary items.

The event will take place on Monday 22 September 2025 from 10am to 12pm at Foyle Arena, and aims to support parents and carers who are interested in exploring sustainable alternatives to single-use baby care products.

A ‘Nappuccino’ is a relaxed, informal gathering where parents of babies and toddlers can come together over a coffee to share experiences, ask questions, and see demonstrations of reusable baby products in a friendly, supportive environment.

The initiative is part of the Council’s commitment to its Zero Waste Circular Economy Strategy—one of the first of its kind in Europe—and is designed to encourage more sustainable living across the district.

Council’s Waste and Recycling Officer, Julie Hannaway, highlighted the practical advantages of making the switch to reusables.

“We’re delighted to bring another Council-led Nappuccino event to the District as part of Recycle Week 2025. Reusable nappies and wipes offer a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative for families. Research shows that parents can save anywhere between £150 to £1,000 from birth to potty training by choosing reusable over disposable nappies.

“And the benefits multiply when reusable nappies are used for more than one child. It’s a great way to reduce household waste, especially given the volume of single-use nappies that end up in landfill every year.”

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, welcomed the initiative as a valuable resource for families looking to reduce their environmental impact.

“It’s fantastic to see our Council once again leading the way in waste reduction education, especially during Recycle Week. This Nappuccino event offers a supportive space for new and expectant parents to learn practical, sustainable baby care tips while meeting others on a similar journey.

“The environmental impact of disposable nappies is enormous—every single one ever sent to landfill still exists today.  Events like this empower families to make informed choices that are better for both their wallets and the planet.”

The Nappuccino will include demonstrations of reusable nappies and wipes, free resources, and the opportunity to speak to experienced staff and parents who already use reusables.

No booking is required, and all parents, guardians, and carers are welcome to attend.
