Dog owners encouraged to keep pets safe this Halloween

1 October 2026

Derry City and Strabane District Council has encouraged its residents to take extra care of their pets in the lead-up to Halloween as fireworks displays and celebrations get underway.

Residents are reminded that fireworks can be extremely distressing for animals, particularly dogs, with sudden loud noises and flashes of lights causing anxiety. With the increase of organised and private firework displays around Halloween, Council is reminding residents that preparation can make a significant difference to a dogs wellbeing. Some tips include walking your dog before dark and ensure it has had toilet breaks before fireworks start, feed the dog before any organised displays start and keeping dogs indoors in familiar surroundings.

More advice from the Dog’s Trust include checking that homes, gardens and gates are secure to prevent pets from escaping if startled, close curtains and use the TV to try and mask the sound of fireworks as well as creating a safe and comforting space. Owners are encouraged to avoid leaving anxious dogs along while fireworks are taking place and remain calm around your pets while avoiding punishing fearful behaviour.

Enda Cummins, Principal Environmental Health Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, said, "Halloween is an exciting time of year across the district, but it can be a stressful experience for many pets. By taking a few simple precautions, dog owners can help their pets feel safe and secure and reduce the risk of animals becoming frightened or going missing during fireworks displays.”

As part of the Halloween celebrations across the city and district, there will be organised firework displays in Derry and Strabane on the evening of Saturday 31st October. For full programme details, please visit www.derryhalloween.com
