Have a Roarsome time at Strabane Summer Jamm!

30 May 2023

If you’re planning a visit to Strabane Summer Jamm on June 17th, then you may think you’ve stepped back in time – to the Jurassic period – as the Roar Roar dinosaurs take over the town.

Junior palaeontologists will have the chance to check out terrifying Tyson the T-Rex and mischievous Velociraptors Vinny and Blue and can even help the dinosaur rangers feed the Baby Dinos. Find out more about what the dinosaurs hunted and snapped up for tea and how they lived millions of years ago. Kids can also get digging and hunt for fossils or create their very own 3D Dinosaur and there will be plenty of fun and creative Dino related activities available on the day.

As well as live music and animation on the streets, there will be lots of cultural and creative activities included in this year’s Summer Jamm programme including the unusual Thai inspired art of sand painting. Learn how to use a mandala of coloured powder to create unique patterns and a personalised permanent artwork. Traditionally most sand mandalas are deconstructed shortly after their completion.

If you prefer art that gives you a giggle, then check out Barry McGowan’s quirky caricatures, guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. With over 20 years’ experience capturing portraits Barry will be sketching up a storm at Summer Jamm for anyone who dares sit for a unique personalised portrait.

Looking ahead to the event, Festival and Events Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Jacqueline Whoriskey, said: “Strabane Summer Jamm is just weeks away and there’s great excitement already as the final preparations are made. There’s so much going on this year with activities for all ages, which will be a great draw for families. The local business community is looking forward to a busy day as the streets of Strabane will be buzzing. Here’s hoping the good weather stays with us as that would just be the icing on the cake.”

There’s plenty of entertainment throughout the day for all the family from 12noon – 5pm, with street performances, street drumming, and circus school skills aplenty. Main Street will host a range of attractions including live music, Kidz Farm, Market stalls, the Loughs Agency Marine Machine, an array of training services, and even an appearance from the Strabane Brass Band.

Cullens Funfair will also be taking up residence in the Canal Carpark from June 16th – 25th for anyone who wants to start the celebrations early.

Enjoy some live action at the Urban Sports drop in workshops taking place in Castle Street from 12noon – 5pm. From BMX skills to scooter stunts, young people and adults are invited to enter the Action Sports Arena where they will have the chance to brush up on a range of new activities led by a team of expert coaches from the Urban Sports team.
