Huge crowds take the bait at 2026 North West Angling Fair

31 March 2026

Angling enthusiasts gathered along the River Mourne at the weekend as the 2026 North West Angling Fair made a successful return to the Melvin Sports Complex in Strabane.

Jointly organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Loughs Agency, the annual event celebrated all aspects of angling, attracting visitors from across the UK and Ireland for a packed programme of demonstrations, exhibitions and family-friendly activities.

The enhanced facilities and additional space were widely praised by exhibitors, demonstrators and attendees alike, contributing to an improved overall visitor experience.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, himself a keen angler, attended the event and welcomed the strong turnout, highlighting the importance of showcasing the region’s natural resources.

“The North West Angling Fair continues to be a fantastic celebration of fishing and everything it has to offer,” he said.

“It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages and experience levels coming together to enjoy the event and I picked up a few handy tips and techniques myself.

“Our region boasts world-class angling opportunities and this weekend was a great opportunity to showcase the rivers and resources we are so fortunate to have.”

A major highlight of the weekend was the impressive lineup of world-class casting demonstrators, including Scott Mackenzie, Gordon Armstrong, Dan O’Neill, Charles Jardine, Peter Driver, Jonathan Moore, Lucinda Ewin and Tom Brown, who drew large crowds along the River Mourne with their expert displays.

Beginner-friendly initiatives also proved hugely popular with Pauline McClenaghan and Ian Gamble’s casting clinics providing an accessible introduction to fly fishing for those new to the sport. The free sessions were fully booked, reflecting strong interest from first-time participants.

Inside the Main Hall and new extension, visitors explored a diverse range of angling merchandise, with leading fishing tackle producers, fly-tying brands and specialist outfitters showcasing the latest equipment and innovations.

The ever-popular Fly Tyers Row once again attracted significant attention, with skilled tyers demonstrating their craft and sharing knowledge with the public.

Encouraging youth participation remained a central focus of the event and the Under 16s Fly Tying Competition was a standout success with young anglers demonstrating impressive skill and creativity.

APGAI–IRE instructors Arthur Greenwood, Trevor Greene and Trevor Norris were on hand throughout the weekend to offer expert guidance and encouragement.

Council’s Festival and Events Officer, Catherine Ashford, praised the success of the event and the strong engagement from attendees.

“The fair offered something for everyone, from expert demonstrations and masterclasses to opportunities for young people and beginners to get involved,” she said.

“It’s fantastic to see such a strong community spirit around angling in the North West.”

Organisers have extended their thanks to all exhibitors, demonstrators, partners, and attendees who contributed to the success of this year’s event.
