Inclusive Autumn Fitness Programmes for all abilities at Melvin Sports Complex
4 September 2025

Derry City and Strabane District Council has announced details of three new fitness programmes taking place at Melvin Sports Complex this September.
The programmes are designed to promote health, wellness, and community engagement for residents of all ages and fitness levels. Beginning this month, the Complex will host Couch to 5K, Chair-Based Aerobics, and Kids Athletics Courses, offering fresh opportunities for the public to move, grow, and connect.
The Couch to 5K programme is the perfect introduction to running for beginners. This supportive, structured 8-week course gently guides participants from walking to running 5km, with expert coaching from Mark Connolly (World Level 4 Middle Distance and Endurance Coach) and a welcoming group environment. Whether you’re looking to improve fitness, build confidence, or train for your first race, this is a great place to start. The programme begins on Monday, September 8th, at 6:45pm.
Chair-Based Aerobics offers a fun, low-impact way for older adults or individuals with limited mobility to stay active. Led by qualified instructors, these sessions focus on improving strength, flexibility, and coordination—all from the comfort of a chair. It’s a great way to boost energy and mood while making new friends. The programme starts Tuesday, September 9th, at 11:00am.
Kids Athletics Courses are specially designed for children aged 5–14 years, helping young athletes develop fundamental skills across a variety of track and field activities. These fun-filled sessions promote physical literacy, teamwork, and a lifelong love of sport in a safe and encouraging environment. The programme starts on Monday, September 8th, at 3:45pm (for ages 5-7) and 4:30pm (for ages 8-14).
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Ruairí McHugh encouraging the public to avail of the programmes that are available said it’s a great opportunity to get active and also meet new people and take part in some positive activities.
He said: "Our goal is to make fitness accessible, enjoyable, and inclusive. These new programmes reflect our commitment to supporting every member of our community—whether they’re taking their first step toward fitness or already on the move."
All sessions will take place at the Melvin Sports Complex facilities. Registration is now open online and in person.
