Local businesswomen celebrated in International Women’s Day event

14 March 2024

Businesswomen and entrepreneurs from across the North West were celebrated in a special International Women’s Day event last week, in conjunction with Ulster University and supported by GoSucceed.

The event celebrated female thought leaders, change makers and game changes making an impact across the North West, championing all things business and entrepreneurship.

Opening the sold-out event in The Great Hall on 11th March, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council was joined by Professor Sandra Moffet and Dr Aisling Reid from the university, as well as DCSDC Business Manager, Maria McKeever and three female leaders form Derry, Letterkenny and Causeway Chambers of Commerce; Anna Doherty, Karen Yates and Claire McDonough.

Mayor of DCSDC, Cllr Patricia Logue, said she was honoured to attend the special event and was delighted to see so many successful and enthusiastic women from Derry and the wider district in attendance.

“It was fantastic to be apart of such an exciting and refreshing event as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, and to have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the talented entrepreneurial women we have here in Derry and Strabane.

“We have some incredible businesswomen here in the North West, from small startups, to leaders in huge corporations and we should be proud to showcase and celebrate them all. Events like these give us an opportunity to not only celebrate women, but to inspire others and create a more diverse, inclusive and sustainable economic landscape for everyone.”

Female business owners from Derry City and Strabane and Causeway Coast and Glens were also exhibiting at the event which included Derry businesses Embodied Pilates Studio and Derry’s Chamber of Commerce.

The event was hosted by founder of Digg Mama and co-founder of the Social Media Awards, Caroline O’Neill and guests enjoyed entertainment from Derry artist, Cheryl Ann.

The business event was part of a series of events and workshops hosted in campuses across Northern Ireland including Derry, Belfast and Cookstown.
