Mayor congratulates Creggan in Bloom volunteers

11 September 2025

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairi McHugh, joined a team of community volunteers this week to plant some beautiful blooms to brighten up Creggan.

Creggan in Bloom is a project led by the Creggan Neighbourhood Management team with support in-kind from Derry City and Strabane District Council. Volunteers from businesses, schools, community groups and youth clubs have been working together to plant 40,000 spring bulbs throughout the Creggan Urban Park area. The flowers will help highlight a new walking trail which will be launched in partnership with Seán Dolans GAA club.

The project aims to enhance wellbeing in the area by engaging local people in outdoor activity and providing an opportunity to contribute to improving the local environment.

Mayor McHugh praised the efforts of all those who are involved, saying: “It was a real pleasure to join the volunteers and see the incredible community spirit that is driving this initiative. Projects like Creggan in Bloom show the power of local people coming together to improve their surroundings and create a sense of pride in place.

“Not only will these blooms transform the landscape, but they will also help encourage people to get outdoors, stay active, and enjoy everything Creggan has to offer.”

Volunteers can still sign up to help with planting. Whether you bring a team or just a few helping hands, your participation will plant a vibrant selection of spring bulbs that will blossom for everyone to enjoy, sign up here https://forms.gle/5FXkRqy8dALTb76QA  Planting will take place week commencing 22 September.
