Mayor congratulates local community groups for reaching impressive Pride of Place competition

2 November 2023

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has congratulated a number of local community organisations who have reached this year’s IPB Pride of Place Awards.

The Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal Youth Engagement Programme and the CARE (Collective Approach to Rural Exclusion) Project have both been recognised for their continued efforts within the community and voluntary sector at this year’s awards.

The Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal Youth Engagement Programme has been nominated for the Community Wellbeing Initiative at this year’s event. A project funded by the Department for Communities and managed by the Education Authority Youth Service, it is hosted by the Fountain Street Community Development Association. The Youth Engagement Plus programme is delivered to young people aged 10-18 years, across all the Neighbourhood Renewal Areas in Strabane Town.

Also nominated, the CARE Project has been recognised under the Community Age Friendly Initiative. Hosted by the Learmount Community Development Project and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the project provides a co-ordinated and holistic approach to the provision of services for isolated and vulnerable older people. The project aims to give people aged 50 and over an opportunity to become more engaged in community life by providing events such as luncheon clubs, a Befriending Service, physical activities, allotments, Men’s Shed as well as volunteering.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Cllr Patricia Logue, congratulated the local community groups on their recent success and said she looked forward to attending the event in Armagh later in the month.

“I’d like to say a huge well done to these two amazing local community organisations who have so rightfully received recognition at this year’s Pride of Place awards. Both groups are incredible and offer amazing opportunities for both young and old in our local communities across the city and district.

“The Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal Youth Engagement Programme are dedicated to creating a safe space for our young people while participating in a range of brilliant programmes and opportunities such as Personal Development, Social Development, Health & Wellbeing, Community Relations, up skilling and Recreational Games.

“The CARE Project is another fantastic service offered by the Learmount Resource, adding to its already extensive list of projects including the Toddler Group, Playgroup, Post Office Service and the Outreach Health Centre, all of which are very well received by the local community.”

Co-operation Ireland, its local authority partners and its headline sponsor IPB Insurance are proud to present the prestigious Pride of Place Competition for the 21st consecutive year on the 10th November in the Armagh City Hotel.

The purpose of the competition is to acknowledge the work being done every day by communities all over the island of Ireland.

The IPB Pride of Place Competition is open to all community groups by way of local authority nomination only. The selection process undertaken for the Derry City and Strabane District Council entries was through the Local Community Growth Planning Partnership Boards.  The Boards were invited to put forward agreed nominations for the urban and rural areas respectively.
