Mayor enjoys special visit from former Primary School

22 April 2026

It was a proud and memorable occasion at the Guildhall as the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, welcomed pupils from his former school, St Patrick’s Primary School and Nursery, for a special visit.

Pupils from the Castlederg school travelled to the Guildhall, where they were greeted by Mayor McHugh in what marked a meaningful full-circle moment in his mayoral year. The visit provided pupils with an opportunity to meet the Mayor and learn more about his civic role and responsibilities, as part of their studies on local government and community life.

During the visit, Mayor McHugh made a special presentation to Primary 7 pupils Abbie and Aoife, recognising their engagement during the session. He also spent time speaking with the group, including pupil Amelia O’Loan.

Accompanying the group were Principal Brian McGurk, Vice-Principal Adrian Doherty and Primary 7 teacher Shauna McHugh, who joined pupils for the visit to the Guildhall.

Speaking following the visit, Mayor McHugh said:
“It was a pleasure to welcome the pupils from St Patrick’s Primary School and Nursery to the Guildhall. They were a credit to their school and showed great interest in how the Council operates. I hope the visit gave them a useful insight into civic life and the important role local government plays in our communities.”
