Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais has expressed her disappointment and concern at the violent incidents that occurred at last night’s Europa League qualifying match between Derry City FC and CSKA Sofia.

The Mayor who was in attendance at the match, said:  “I was deeply upset at what occurred during last night’s Derry City FC match. What should have been a celebratory and enjoyable night for supporters, families and young people, was marred by completely unacceptable behaviour by the visiting fans.

“There is absolutely no place for violence or disorder at any sporting event. My thoughts are with those supporters, particularly local families and children, whose enjoyment of the match was overshadowed by the actions of the away fans. Everyone attending a football match should be able to do so in a safe and welcoming environment.

“I want to acknowledge the professionalism and swift actions of the stewards on the night. Their efforts in responding to the situation and helping to restore order were greatly appreciated. I will be keeping informed of the situation and look forward to hearing about what further measures can be taken to ensure incidents like this do not happen again.

“We will not allow the actions of a small number of people to impact negativity on the club or on our city as a whole, we are a strong and united community who take great pride in our local team. Derry City FC is a source of immense civic pride, and it is vital that local supporters, families and visitors alike can continue to attend matches at the Brandywell feeling safe, respected and able to enjoy the game.

“Everyone has a responsibility to protect the family-friendly atmosphere that has made the Brandywell such a special place to watch football, and I know the club and its supporters share that commitment,” she concluded.
