Mayor Honours World Champion Young Anglers at Guildhall Reception

26 August 2026

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais, recently hosted a reception in the Guildhall to honour Ireland’s Under-19 and Under-24 fly fishing teams following their outstanding success at the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships.

The event recognised the dedication and achievements of the young anglers, including gold medal winners Zach Barnett and Jacob Griffin, and celebrated the support of coaches, families and the wider angling community.

Congratulating the team, Mayor of DCSDC said: "I'd like to say a huge well done to these young people on their amazing achievements - the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into achieving something like this does not go unnoticed. We are all incredibly proud of them and I wish them every success as they continue their passions."

Delivered with support from Loughs Agency, Sport Ireland, Donegal Sports Partnership, Derry City and Strabane District Council, DAERA Inland Fisheries and Inland Fisheries Ireland, the prestigious international event brought together leading young fly anglers for five days of competition across Donegal and Tyrone.
