Mayor hosts over 200 school children in special Local Democracy Event

12 October 2026

As part of Local Democracy Week, Mayor Cllr Grace Uí Niallais welcomed more than 200 pupils from schools across the city and district to the Guildhall for a special 'Meet the Mayor' event.

The visit gave young people the opportunity to learn more about the role of the Mayor, how local government works, and the importance of having their voices heard within their communities. Pupils enjoyed asking questions and meeting elected representatives, including Deputy Mayor Cllr Catherine McDaid, Cllr Shaun Harkin and Alderman Derek Hussey, in an engaging and informative session designed to encourage a greater understanding of local democracy and civic participation.

Speaking following the event, Mayor Uí Niallais said, "I was delighted to welcome over 200 children from schools across our city and district to the Guildhall for a special Meet the Mayor event as part of Local Democracy Week! It was fantastic to meet so many young people, answer their questions and give them an insight into my role as Mayor and how local democracy works. Thank you to all the schools and pupils who took part!"
