20 August 2026
The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais, hosted a special reception in the Guildhall to mark the presentation of the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation Bursaries, recognising a group of recipients committed to advancing peacebuilding, education and community development.
The bursaries, awarded by the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation, support individuals from a range of backgrounds who are undertaking studies and initiatives that reflect the values of peace, reconciliation and positive social change championed by the late Martin McGuinness.
Welcoming guests to the Guildhall, the Mayor praised the recipients for their dedication and commitment. “I’d like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who received the bursary as they continue to work towards building a more inclusive and peaceful society for everyone. I really enjoyed hearing the ambitions and aspirations for the future, as well as celebrating all the positive impact the bursary programme has done so far,” she said.
Joining the Mayor at the reception were members of the McGuinness family, representatives of the Foundation and bursary recipients from across Ireland and beyond. Among those in attendance were Foundation board member Andrew McCartney, Bernie McGuinness and Leona McGuinness, alongside bursary recipients Olayinka Oduwale (Nigeria/Sligo), Catriona Dunleavy (Strabane), Shona Quigley, Louise Downey (both Belfast) and Alex McLaughlin (Derry).
