The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, officially welcomed the players and management of the Steelstown U14 team to the Guildhall this week for a civic reception to honour their recent sporting achievements.

The reception was held to formally recognise the team’s double success, having secured both the County Derry A2 Championship and the prestigious Martin McGuinness Chieftain Gaelic Games tournament title.

Mayor McHugh met with team captain Dara Deery, alongside manager Gary Cunningham and the dedicated coaching staff including, Charlie Conaghan, Shane Collins, Dermot McBride, Michael O'Doherty, and Niall O'Malley, to discuss their impressive season.

Mayor Ruairí McHugh said: “I was delighted to host this reception for the Steelstown U14 team. Winning both the County Derry A2 Championship and the Martin McGuinness Chieftain tournament is a remarkable feat that speaks to their hard work, discipline, and talent.

“I want to congratulate every player and member of the management team on their well-deserved success. They have proven themselves to be fantastic sports ambassadors for the City and District, representing us all with great pride and showing exactly what can be achieved through teamwork and dedication."
