Mayor launches powerful series of events for this year’s Worker’s Rights and Social Justice Programm

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has launched an exciting series of empowering and educational events to celebrate this year’s Workers Rights and Social Justice Programme, taking place from Thursday 23rd April until Sunday 12th May.
Launching the programme this week, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Patricia Logue, said, “As a Council, we are delighted to help launch this year’s Workers Rights and Social Justice Programme.
“Derry and the wider region of the North-West know all too well how important the campaign for social justice and fair rights is, as we look back at our history through the Civil Rights movement. This year’s programme of events offers us the opportunity to reflect on those pivotal times in our history, look at how far we have come and how far we still have to go as we highlight modern day campaigns. I look forward to attending some of the events myself and I would encourage everyone to check out the programme.”
Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) will host a number of events, the programme also includes events organised and managed by Derry Trades Union Council (DTUC). Find out more about the full programme of events at www.derrystrabane.com/workersrights
The Tower Museum will be kicking things off, playing host to a special exhibition, Come and meet ‘Hope’, the Lego Suffragette. ‘Hope’ arrived courtesy of the Education and Engagement team at Parliament Westminster, London. Built using more than 32,000 bricks and taking three Lego employees 171 hours to build, ‘Hope’ was originally displayed in the House of Commons. Access is free and visitors are encouraged to grab a selfie with her while she visits Derry.
The Tower Museum will also host a lecture, ‘Suffragettes and the North West’, by Anne Crilly on at 1pm on Tuesday 30th April. Anne will explore the links with the Suffragette movement and the North West region including links to the shirt factory. Access is free but booking is essential and can be done so by emailing [email protected] or calling 028 7137 2411.
An exciting Lego Hunt will take place in the Tower Museum from 26th until 6th May, giving families and individuals the chance to pick up a Lego Hunt leaflet and try to find all the Lego figures hidden in the ‘Story of Derry’. Admission is by entry ticket (to the Tower Museum) only with a treat for the children who find all the figures.
The annual May Day March and Rally will take place on Saturday 4th May in Guildhall Square.
