Mayor pays tribute to Bishop McKeown on silver jubilee

27 April 2026

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, joined with people across the community for a special service in St Eugene’s Cathedral yesterday, marking the silver anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Donal McKeown.

The mass of thanksgiving provided an opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful work which Bishop McKeown has delivered throughout his ministry and Mayor McHugh today paid tribute to him on this special milestone.

“On behalf of the people of Derry and Strabane I want to recognise the work that Bishop McKeown has delivered over the decades with such dedication, compassion and kindness,” Mayor McHugh said.

“As a leader Bishop McKeown has always been fearless and passionate in standing up for those in need and has never shied away from the challenges of his role. His wisdom and insight has made him a trusted, respected and inspirational mentor and guide to so many.

“I want to congratulate Bishop McKeown on reaching this milestone, and wish him the very best of health and good wishes as he enters into the next phase of his life and ministry.”
