Mayor pays tribute to devoted community activist Tony Hassan

20 February 2024

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Patricia Logue, has paid tribute to former local councillor and community activist Tony Hassan, who passed away yesterday.

Tony Hassan was the longest serving councillor on the former Derry City Council, having first been elected in 1997. He spent over 50 years serving the Greater Shantallow community both in his political role and as a community representative. In December Mayor Logue welcomed Mr Hassan to the Guildhall where he presented her with a copy of his recently published memoir, which she said fittingly captured the dedication and love he had for his local community.

“I am deeply saddened today at the loss of one of this city’s most passionate community champions,” she said. “Tony was a dear friend and colleague and a much loved and respected figure in the Shantallow community where he devoted many years of his life to changing things for the better. I was so delighted that he launched his memoir before Christmas and had the chance to share his thoughts and memories, and it was so typical of Tony that he was giving all proceeds from the book to the Foyle Hospice.

“He spent so much of his time helping others and was absolutely dedicated to his role as a local councillor, where his kindness and determination to deliver will always be remembered. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to Tony’s wife Christine and family, and also my thanks on behalf of the City and District for the wonderful contribution he made to bringing about positive change over the years.”
