Mayor Returns to Former Primary School in Castlederg for a homecoming visit

25 March 2026

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, made a special homecoming visit this week as he returned to his former primary school in Castlederg.

The Mayor visited St Patrick’s Primary School and Nursery on Tuesday 24 March, where he was warmly welcomed by Primary 7 pupils and staff, including Principal Brian McGurk. The visit marked a meaningful opportunity for the Mayor to reconnect with his roots and engage with the next generation of young people in the local community.

Councillor McHugh was accompanied by his mother, Sylvia McHugh, a former employee at the school - making the occasion particularly significant as they revisited a place that played an important role in both their lives.

During the visit, the Mayor spent time speaking informally with Primary 7 pupils and staff, sharing insights into his role and responsibilities as Mayor, as well as reflecting on his own experiences growing up in Castlederg. The session provided pupils with a valuable opportunity to ask questions and learn more about civic leadership and community service.

Mayor McHugh said he was delighted to return to his former primary school and reconnect with pupils and staff during the visit.
“It was a real privilege to return to St Patrick’s Primary School, where so many of my own memories were formed. Seeing the enthusiasm and curiosity of the pupils was inspiring, and I was delighted to share a little about my journey and what it means to serve our community. I hope it encourages them to believe in their own potential and the opportunities ahead. I loved getting the chance to walk through the corridors again and see all the fantastic work being done across the school.”
