Mayor supports new Pride banner at the Tinnies

20 August 2025

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, has been pictured with a new pride banner in Strabane.

It was commissioned by Youth Action with the support of the Mayor’s Office and will be displayed at the Tinnies in Strabane to celebrate Pride Week.

Mayor McHugh was joined by Amanda Biega, Good Relations Officer with Council, Jessica Taggart from Youth Action and Oisin Doherty, who was involved in the design and Councillor Antaine Ó Fearghail, a member of the LGBTQIA Working Group on Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Mayor McHugh said he was very proud to be involved in the project.

“I am delighted to welcome this new Pride banner which will be displayed proudly at the Tinnies in Strabane to celebrate Pride Week,” he said.

“This initiative, driven by the request of Youth Action, shows our council's commitment to supporting and celebrating our LGBTQIA+ community.
“It is so important that we foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone in our city and district.
“This banner is more than just a symbol, it represents our shared values of equality, diversity, and acceptance.
“I want to thank Youth Action for their proactive efforts and everyone involved in this project.
“This is a powerful statement that Derry and Strabane is a place where all people can feel safe, valued and respected."
