As Domestic Violence Awareness Week begins today (19–25 October), the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais is calling on the local community to stand together, recognise the signs of domestic abuse, and ensure every survivor knows that support is available.

Mayor Ui Niallais said that domestic abuse remains a critical issue that touches all parts of society, often hidden behind closed doors. She said widespread education and early intervention are important and emphasised that domestic abuse goes far beyond physical violence and can affect anyone regardless of age, background, or gender.

She said: “Domestic abuse can affect anyone, in any community. It is not always visible, and it can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse, as well as coercive control. As Mayor, I want to reaffirm that domestic abuse is never acceptable and that anyone experiencing it deserves to be heard, believed and supported. This week, I am encouraging everyone across the Derry and Strabane district to learn more about the signs of domestic abuse, challenge harmful attitudes and help ensure that people know where to turn for confidential support.”

The Mayor added that she will be attending a conference organised by the Dove House Advocacy Project entitled “Be the Change” on Wednesday, 21 October, in the Guildhall while the Women’s Centre in Derry are hosting an event entitled Behind the Mask on Tuesday morning at 10.30am. Throughout the week, local initiatives and community organisations across the Council area will focus on raising awareness around coercive control, financial exploitation, and non-physical forms of abuse, empowering neighbours, family members, and colleagues to speak up and offer help. The Council will also be lighting up the Council Offices and the Tinnies Purple in support of Domestic Violence this weekend.

The Mayor concluded with a direct message of hope and reassurance to anyone currently experiencing abuse. She said : “You do not have to face this alone. Together, we can help create a safer, more supportive community for everyone.”
