Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Grace Uí Niallais has welcomed news that Council has granted Listed Building Consent for the partial demolition of the unsafe structure at 10-16 Pump Street.

Speaking following the September meeting of Full Council, held yesterday at Full Council, where it was raised under chairpersons business, the Mayor said that Listed Building Consent was granted in accordance with Councils LDP Plan Strategy, following consultation with Historic Environment Division, the consideration of supporting information and engineering reports that were submitted on behalf of the landowner and third party representations that were submitted during the planning process. In accordance with the approved plans and condition, the owners will have 24 months to carry out the works.
Welcoming the decision, Mayor Uí Niallais said it was critical to securing the physical future of a very historic area of the city centre. She said the granting of consent was important in terms of the health and safety of the public and would also help facilitate the future reopening of Pump Street.
She explained that while the owners will have 24 months to carry out the extensive works it is hoped the containers will be removed in the very near future.
She said: “For a considerable time the deteriorating structure at 10-16 Pump Street has been a concern. News that the Listed Building Consent has been granted is a positive step forward that will allow the owners to progress with the works to prevent further deterioration and to facilitate the reinstatement of the façade, facilitate the removal of the containers and the reopening of the road. I want to acknowledge the efforts of the Council teams and the HED of the Department for Environment in relation to this matter and their commitment to protecting the historic fabric of Pump Street.”
The Mayor added that Council would continue to work with the owners of the building and would also continue to engage with businesses and all relevant stakeholders in the area.
