The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais has welcomed today’s Court of Appeal decision to overturn the legal block on the A5 road project.

Mayor Uí Niallais said that the decision handed down by the Lady Chief Justice ruling in favour of the Department for Infrastructure’s challenge was positive news for the North West and cleared the path for the vital transport corridor between Derry and Dublin to finally proceed.

She said: “Today’s decision is very welcome news. For too long, this critical project has been impacted by delays and legal challenges. Now that the green light has been given, there must be no more delays. While the A5 is a crucial piece of cross border infrastructure that will transform connectivity between Derry and Dublin, boosting regional development and accessibility, it is above all else a lifesaving project. Our first and most important thoughts today are with the families who have lost loved ones along this route, and those who have campaigned with extraordinary dignity and persistence to ensure no other family suffers the same heartbreak.

“Getting this project over the line is a testament to the collective effort of many people and I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank everyone involved in this tireless campaign and who refused to give up on a safer future for our communities. It is now vital that the project is fully prioritised and moves forward swiftly to the delivery stage.”
