Much-Needed Social Homes Open in Heart of Derry-Londonderry

First residents move into 40 new apartments as £7.5 million development helps meet growing local housing demand.

Arbour Housing has completed its John Street apartment development in Derry-Londonderry, with the first residents now moving into 40 high-quality social homes for people aged 55 and over.

The development, which represents a total investment of £7.5m, includes 24 two-bedroom apartments and 16 one-bedroom apartments. Designed to support independent living, the homes are modern, accessible and well-connected to local services, amenities and public transport links, helping residents remain active and connected within their community.

Supported by £4.7 million in grant funding from the Department for Communities through the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the development is located on a prominent site between John Street and Foyle Road in the city centre.

The scheme helps increase the supply of much-needed social housing in an area facing significant demand. The latest figures show there are over 5,000 households experiencing housing stress, highlighting the continuing demand for affordable, secure housing across the Derry City and Strabane District.

Delivered in partnership with contractor Brendan Loughran & Sons and McGirr Architects, the apartments have been built to Lifetime Homes and Secure by Design standards, ensuring accessibility, safety and adaptability for residents both now and in the future. Energy-efficient features have also been incorporated to help reduce energy costs and support sustainable living.

Tomas O Maonaigh is one of the first residents to move into the John Street development. Born and bred in the city, he had been living in temporary accommodation for a considerable length of time and was thrilled to finally secure one of the flats.

“After a long time on the waiting list I couldn’t believe it when I was told I’d been allocated such a wonderful place to call my home. My flat is really well fitted out, is bright and spacious, and the views over the Foyle are incredible. I’m still in disbelief and look forward to enjoying this space and welcoming guests, including my six grandchildren, over the years ahead.”
