Mullenan City Cemetery Now Open for Burials

26 May 2026

Derry City and Strabane District Council is pleased to confirm that the new municipal cemetery at Mullenan Road is now fully operational and open for burials.

This significant £5.2 million investment provides a modern, peaceful and accessible space for families to remember their loved ones, ensuring burial provision for the city for many years to come. As the existing City Cemetery at Lone Moor Road approaches full capacity, Mullenan Cemetery will now become the primary burial site serving the Derry City area.

Designed with dignity, accessibility and long-term sustainability in mind, Mullenan Cemetery is a modern and inclusive facility that offers a calm and respectful environment within a thoughtfully landscaped and tranquil setting. The site has been developed as a seamless lawn cemetery, maintaining a clean and serene appearance throughout.

The facility provides approximately 3,500 burial plots, offering around 20 years of capacity, with scope for future expansion.

Cemetery facilities

Mullenan City Cemetery has been designed to meet the needs of a diverse community, with a wide range of facilities including:

  • Interdenominational provision including dedicated space for Islamic burials

  • Pedestrian and cycle access, including links to Balloughry Road and potential future connections to local greenways
  • Level pathways and accessible design features, ensuring ease of movement for all visitors

Accessibility and Visitor Information

Accessibility has been a central consideration in the design of the site, ensuring it is welcoming and usable for all members of the community. The cemetery features level ground throughout, clearly defined pathways, dropped kerbs, and accessible facilities to support visitors with limited mobility.

Opening hours

The cemetery is open to visitors:

Summer: 8.00am – 8.00pm

Winter: 8.00am – 4.30pm

The opening of Mullenan Cemetery marks an important step in ensuring the continued provision of a vital service for the people of Derry City and Strabane District.
