Newtownstewart Car Park Improvement Scheme completed

6 December 2023

Derry City and Strabane District Council announced works to improve the existing Townhall Street public car park in Newtownstewart have been completed at a formal launch event held this week.

The project is a culmination of a £50k investment programme by Derry City & Strabane District Council to upgrade the existing car park in terms of essential resurfacing works, new boundary treatment and relining. The aim of the project is to improve the appearance, functionality, and usage of this key free public car park facility in Newtownstewart town centre.

Welcoming the project, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jason Barr said he was delighted to see the completion of the project and the investment by Council in carrying out much needed improvements to the car park.

“The car park plays an important role and contribution to the town centre in providing 25 spaces for the benefit of local businesses, shoppers and residents, and I hope the improvement works will encourage greater use of this free parking facility,” he added.

A spokesperson for the Newtownstewart Traders Group also welcomed the project.

“It’s great to see this significant investment that Council have made in upgrading Townhall Street Car Park and that it will now help to accommodate shoppers and workers to the area. This development is greatly appreciated particularly in the lead up to Christmas and shoppers can avail of stress-free shopping in a small local town, great prices, excellent service and this in turn will help support the local small businesses that operate in Newtownstewart. The Traders would also wish to highlight there are also additional car parking spaces available at Castle Brae and at St Eugenes Community Hub on Oldcastle Road”
