Parents learn of eligibility for additional benefits at Strabane Library event

31 January 2024

A welfare rights information session at Strabane Library has proved a fruitful one for local parents after many successfully learned of their eligibility for additional benefits.        A Family Benefits Advisor from Employers For Childcare was in attendance to give free, confidential and impartial advice to parents and carers covering all areas of benefits and help towards the cost of registered childcare.  Employers For Childcare is a charity that works to support parents, employers, and childcare providers across the UK.  The event was promoted by Derry City and Strabane District Council, in partnership with Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal / Local Growth Partnership. “The advisor carried out benefit entitlement checks to ensure that those who attended were aware of all the financial support to which they were entitled and how to apply for it,” explained an event organiser. “Ten people had their eligibility for benefits checked by the advisor from Employers For Childcare and the result was a very pleasant surprise for all of the attendees.  “All were entitled to more financial support through benefits, on average they were each entitled to an extra £256 in benefits per month. “This would make a substantial difference to most people’s financial situation.” The spokesperson highlighted that much of the financial support available is available to those who are in employment. “Many people don’t realise that, even if they are working, they may still be entitled to financial help. “Whether it’s a first-time parent wanting to know what support is available, someone considering altering their hours of work or a family member living with a disability or additional needs, the advisor will be available to work out what is best for each individual circumstances.” The benefits available to parents include Universal Credit, Tax-Free Childcare, Tax Credits, Income Support, Housing Benefit and disability benefits. As many households have received notification of having to move from their existing benefits to Universal Credit, the advisors also checked how making a claim for Universal Credit could affect household entitlement. For further information on their eligibility for benefits people can visit the Employers For Childcare Website or ring freephone 0800 028 3008 or email [email protected].
