Work by contractors appointed by Derry City and Strabane District Council to carry out feature lighting upgrades on the Peace Bridge is progressing well. However in order to facilitate the next stage of the works, a temporary closure of the Peace Bridge will be required from Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October, weather permitting.
The works will see the bridge’s existing fluorescent feature lighting upgraded to modern, energy-efficient LED technology, including a complete overhaul of the lighting on the spires. Council has been working closely with the bridge’s owners, the Department for Infrastructure, to secure the necessary access permissions to allow the works to take place. As part of the works, a. An approved traffic management plan has been provided by DfI Roads for the closure that includes the temporary closure to allow contractors to safely access the lighting infrastructure, with elements of the installation requiring metal floor grilles along the structure to be lifted and removed while work is carried out.
During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use the alternative route via the Craigavon Bridge. Council is asking members of the public to cooperate fully with the temporary arrangements, follow all safety and diversion signage in place and allow additional time for their journey.
Once completed, members of the public will see a striking visual transformation, restoring full illumination to the structure. The works will be carried out during daylight hours and the wider lighting project is expected to take a number of weeks, with the aim of having the new lighting fully operational in time for Derry’s Halloween celebrations.
Council appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while these essential works are undertaken and apologises for any temporary inconvenience caused.
