Planning Committee approves new Coshquin Play Park

7 May 2026

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee have approved plans for an eagerly awaited new play park in Coshquin at its monthly meeting held in the Guildhall.
The approved development, located adjacent to Little Acorns Pre-School on Benview Road and opposite the Cosh Bar and Grill, will deliver a modern, fully equipped and inclusive play facility for the local community.
The scheme represents a renewal of a previously approved application and will ensure the delivery of the long-planned community amenity when funding is secured.
The proposed play park will include a wide range of play equipment with safety surfacing, enclosed fencing and gated access, seating areas, bins and cycle stands.
It will also feature new footpaths, improved maintenance access, tree and shrub planting, grassed areas, and park signage. The design prioritises accessibility, with level pathways and inclusive features to accommodate children and families of all abilities.
The Planning Committee noted that the development will enhance community infrastructure in the Coshquin and wider Buncrana Road area, complementing nearby residential properties and Little Acorns Pre-School, while promoting health, wellbeing and outdoor activity.
The proposal also incorporates sustainable drainage and landscaping measures, with no significant environmental or traffic impacts identified and no objections received during the consultation process.
Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor John Boyle, welcomed the key milestone in the process.
"This is a significant investment in the Coshquin area and a very positive step for local families,” he said.
“The Committee is pleased to approve a high-quality, inclusive play facility that will provide a safe and accessible space for children and young people.
“Developments like this play an important role in strengthening communities, supporting wellbeing, and enhancing the overall quality of our shared spaces."
Work on the development is expected to progress in line with planning conditions, with further updates on funding and delivery timelines to be provided in due course.
