Planning committee approves new greenway section plans
5 February 2026
Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee today welcomed plans for a new stretch of greenway on the former Ebrington School site in the Waterside.
The site is located within an existing residential area and alongside Glendermott Cricket Club and will enhance pedestrian access to Heron Way, Lapwing Way, Ebrington Oaks, Cliftonville Avenue and Ulsterville Avenue.
The proposed three meter wide greenway follows a natural alignment through the former school grounds, utilising an existing corridor that is well-suited for active travel. Members were told that the plans were in line with the Open Space Strategy within the Local Development Plan for the City and District helping to meet sporting and recreational needs and protecting and developing the district’s network of open space.
The greenway has been designed to integrate well within the existing residential area, with lighting to promote safety and pedestrian access to surrounding streets.
Chair of Council’s Planning Committee, Councillor John Boyle, said: “I welcome the greenway plans which will significantly enhance pedestrian connectivity for local residents.
“The greenway design utilises the natural existing layout of the site making it ideally suited to active travel helping to promote health and wellbeing and encouraging more people to walk or cycle. It will also improve access between streets in the area while complementing neighbouring amenities such as Glendermott Cricket Club.
“The inclusion of lighting and thoughtful integration within the surrounding residential area will help promote safety and accessibility, ensuring this greenway becomes a valuable asset for the local community.”
