Public encouraged to have their say on proposed recycling facility in Castlederg

29 November 2023

Residents in Castlederg are encouraged to give their thoughts and opinions on a proposed state of the art recycling facility in the Drumquin Road area of the town in a new consultation.

Derry City and Strabane District Council have recognised a need for the rural community as there are no community recycling facilities within the area. The collection facility will be for materials such as wood, green waste, metals, paint, soil & stones, plastic, electrical equipment as well as other items. There will also be collection banks for bottles, cans and clothes. It will only function as a collection point, and once collection containers are full, the materials will be transported off site to other locations for re-use, recycling, treatment and disposal in a manner consistent with the principle of sustainable and safe waste management.

The three-month consultation will give members of the public the opportunity to find out more about the proposal and give their honest views on welcoming such a facility to the local community.

An engagement event will also take place on Wednesday 17th January 2024 from 2-8pm in Derg Valley Leisure Centre, for people to express their views in person, discuss the proposal in further detail and view site plans.

Conor Canning, Head of Environment at Derry City and Strabane District Council, encouraged the public to take part in the consultation and have their say on the proposed facility.

“As a council, we have recognised the need for a recycling facility for the rural area of Castlederg and we are delighted to reach the next step in delivering such a facility to the local community. We would love to see as many people as possible taking part in the consultation and giving us your valuable feedback on the proposed state of the art facility. You can easily take part online or by filling in a questionnaire at Council offices in Derry or Strabane or Derg Valley Leisure Centre. Additionally, if anyone wants to discuss the plans in further detail, we look forward to welcoming you along to the engagement event in the Derg Valley Leisure Centre in the new year.”

If the proposal is successful, the public are reminded that the temporary storage of materials will be subject to licence requirements and therefore containers will be regularly emptied reducing risk of odour and spillage. A staff supervision and welfare building will also be provided. The proposed facility will not include any incineration or landfill activities.

The consultation closes at 4pm on Wednesday 27th February 2024. For more information, and to view site plans, please visit: www.derrystrabane.com/consultations
