Public invited to shape the future of Ballyfattan pitch

12 March 2026

Local residents and community stakeholders are being encouraged to take part in a public consultation event to help shape the future development of the former Ballyfattan Pitch and surrounding lands in Sion Mills.

Derry City and Strabane District Council will host a public drop-in consultation event on Thursday 19th March, from 10am to 9pm, at Sion Mills Community Association. The event will give residents an opportunity to share their ideas on how the disused Ballyfattan Pitch and its environs could be regenerated for the benefit of the local community.

Officers from the Council’s Green Infrastructure Team will be present throughout the day to meet with residents and stakeholders, listen to their views, and gather ideas as part of a co-design process to inform the future regeneration of this valuable space.

The consultation is designed to ensure the community plays a central role in shaping how the site could be developed, with input helping to guide potential plans that reflect local needs, priorities and aspirations.

Encouraging people to attend the event, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, said: “This is an important opportunity for the local community to help develop this significant space in Sion Mills. We want to hear directly from all sections of the community about how they would like to see the former Ballyfattan Pitch and surrounding lands developed.

“By taking part in this co-design process, people can play a meaningful role in creating a space that benefits the whole community, and I would strongly encourage everyone with an interest to drop in on the day and share their ideas.”

Residents can attend the event at any time during the drop-in period between 10am and 9pm. All are welcome and no booking is required.
