Public invited to take part in Bay Road Tree Planting Day
30 January 2026
Derry City and Strabane District Council is inviting members of the public to take part in a special Tree Planting Day at Bay Road Park. The event will take place on Saturday 21 February, from 10am to 1pm, where hundreds of trees will be planted as part of the Life Project — an innovative initiative that marks significant life events with the planting of a sapling tree.
Since its launch eight years ago, the project has seen over 10,000 trees planted across the district.
Every birth, death, civil partnership, and marriage registered in the Council’s registration offices in Derry and Strabane is commemorated with a tree, helping to enhance the local environment, improve air quality, and support community wellbeing.
Speaking at the event launch at Bay Road Park, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, encouraged people of all ages to take part:
"The Life Tree Project is a meaningful way to mark and remember key moments in our lives, from births to marriages and losses. The Tree Planting Day is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and contribute to a project that improves our landscape and air quality.”
“I would encourage everyone to register early and get involved."
Mayor McHugh was joined at the launch by Jean Kelly, Proprietor of Eglinton Eyecare, who will bring a team to the Tree Planting Day to demonstrate and exercise their commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
The event has proven popular in recent years with local employers who want to build team spirit while contributing positively to community wellbeing.
Spades and guidance will be provided on the day, and volunteers are advised to wear suitable footwear, warm clothing, and gloves.
The planting site is located beside Bay Road Soccer, with parking available nearby.
Council is also inviting members of the public who have previously received a sapling through the Life Project to share their experiences.
Your feedback will help enhance the future delivery of the initiative.
