Rebellion, Passion, and Rock: Spring Awakening Ignites the Stage at Alley Theatre

7 August 2025

The Ignite Project CIC makes its debut in Strabane with their production of the beautifully raw, Spring Awakening, the musical, running at the Alley Theatre from Thursday 21st – Saturday 23rd August.

The Ignite Project was established as a youth training programme for young aspiring performers in the North West region and has produced full scale productions which have been met by incredible reviews. For the last two years they have produced their shows in the Millennium Forum, Footloose and Sweeney Todd, but this August they are bringing their Summer production to The Alley Theatre in Strabane. This years show for The Ignite Project is the musical, Spring Awakening. As always, the show will be staged after just two weeks of intensive rehearsals.

Taking place in the cabaret style auditorium this story follows three teenagers, Melchior (Oisin Conway), Wendla (Ella Terry-Sweeney) and Mortiz (Ronan Gallagher) and their peers as they navigate coming of age into adulthood. This story deals with themes that, although heavy, are very relevant to todays society, just as they were when the play was first written over 100 years ago. Dealing with themes of sexuality, consent, mental health, suicide, abuse and death, this story is one that The Ignite Project is worth telling.

The two leading roles are played by Oisin Conway of Loughmacrory and Ella Terry-Sweeney of Glenn. Both of these young performers have recently been accepted to study with Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in their first ever course in Belfast in September. The rest of the cast is made up of young performers aged 16 - 22 years old from all over the North West region; from Donegal, Derry, Strabane and Omagh, and the surrounding areas.

The Ignite Project was founded by Emmet Stewart who serves as the Director and Choreographer, as well as Jamie-Lee Gallagher who serves as Musical Director. Having had 17 members receive offers to train at some of the top UK theatre schools and with alumni having worked in the West End, UK and International Tours, The Ignite Project is going from strength to strength. A huge part of this is the fact that alumni such as Clodagh Greene return regularly to enhance the training provided. Clodagh graduated from Trinity Laban last Summer and is coming to assist with Spring Awakening in her time off between two different performing contracts in London.

This show is not suitable for young children due to the themes explored within the piece.
