Residents invited to shape plans for new Carnhill play park

Local residents are being encouraged to have their say on exciting proposals for a new state-of-the-art play park in Carnhill at a public engagement event taking place next month.

Local residents are being encouraged to have their say on exciting proposals for a new state-of-the-art play park in Carnhill at a public engagement event taking place next month.

Derry City and Strabane District Council is inviting members of the community to attend the event on Monday November 9th, at St Brigid's Hall, Carnhill, where proposals for the new play facility will be unveiled and feedback gathered to help shape the final design.

The investment follows the allocation of £500,000 through Council's Capital Review Group to design and deliver a new play park for the Ballyarnett District Electoral Area. Following an extensive site assessment process and engagement with local stakeholders, the preferred location for the facility has been identified as the lands in front of St Brigid's Primary School.

A local steering group has worked closely with Council's Green Infrastructure team to develop the emerging design, which incorporates a wide range of play opportunities and has been created using an inclusive-by-design approach to ensure children and young people of all abilities can enjoy the facility.

Members of the public can drop in to view the proposals, speak directly with Council officers and provide feedback during the consultation sessions, which will take place between 10am and 1pm, 2pm and 6pm, and 7pm and 9pm.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, encouraged people to get involved and ensure the proposed park reflects the needs of the local community. "The development of a new play park in Carnhill represents a significant investment in the wellbeing of children, young people and families across the area,” she said.

“For many years local residents have highlighted the need for enhanced play provision and this project offers a fantastic opportunity to create a vibrant and accessible space that can be enjoyed by generations to come.

"Just as important as the investment itself is the opportunity for the community to help shape the final design. We want to hear from parents, grandparents, young people, schools, community groups and local residents to ensure that the finished facility truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the wider community.

"Your feedback will play a vital role in ensuring we deliver a play park that is inclusive, sustainable and meets the needs of both current and future generations."

The information gathered from the consultation event will help shape the final design before a further report is presented to Members outlining the consultation findings and next steps for the project.
