RoadSafe Saturday – A day to learn, remember and make our roads safer

7 November 2025

Local residents, families, road users and community groups are encouraged to come along to RoadSafe Saturday, taking place in Guildhall Square on 15th November. The annual event, delivered by the North West Road Safety Partnership (NWRSP) and local charity Life After, aims to promote safer road practices, reduce the number of road traffic collisions in the region and provide education and awareness for all road users.

Running from 11am until 3pm, the event will feature live road traffic collision re-enactments and rescue demonstrations carried out by emergency services. These demonstrations provide the public with a powerful and realistic insight into the vital and often challenging work undertaken by first responders at the scene of serious incidents.

Speaking ahead of the event, Sandy Arthur, Chair of the North West Road Safety Partnership, said: “RoadSafe Saturday is about bringing our community together to learn, understand, and take responsibility for safety on our roads. Every collision has a ripple effect that goes far beyond the incident itself. We are proud to be working alongside Life After to deliver this event and to continue pushing for a culture where safety and care for one another on the road comes first.”

Life After, founded by individuals who have first-hand experience of losing loved ones in road collisions, will play a central role in the event. Bobby Bradley, Chair of Life After, emphasised the importance of preventing more families from experiencing such loss: “For many of our members, the consequences of road traffic collisions are deeply personal and permanent. Our aim is not only to support those who have lost loved ones, but to prevent others from ever having to experience that loss. This year’s RoadSafe Saturday offers an important opportunity for the public to see the reality of what happens at crash scenes and to hear the message that every decision on the road matters.”

The initiative has also received strong backing from the organisations which make up the NWRSP – these include elected representatives along with members from Life After, NIFRS, PSNI, Department for Infrastructure, PCSP, Life Cycles, and Finan Opticians.

Chair of Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), Keith Kerrigan, expressed the PCSP’s ongoing commitment to supporting road safety: “The PCSP is proud to support this initiative. Too many lives have been lost or changed forever on our local roads. Events like RoadSafe Saturday help raise awareness in a powerful and practical way, reminding us all that safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage families, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike to come along and be part of this important day.”

Chief Inspector Cherith Craig, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, added her support, she said: “Driving is a huge responsibility, and we all play a part in keeping ourselves and everyone else safe on the roads.

“The impact of serious and fatal collisions is colossal with lives changed in an instant, and nothing ever the same again.

“Dedicated days such as Roadsafe Saturday are really important and remind drivers of their responsibility in keeping our roads safe for everyone. Our ask is that everyone adheres to the Fatal Five every single time they get behind the wheel of their vehicle - don’t drink or take drugs and drive; slow down; don’t be careless; always wear your seat belt and never use your mobile phone while driving.”

This year’s message is clear: every road user has a part to play in preventing further tragedies. By coming together as a community, organisers hope to promote safer habits and reduce the number of devastating collisions across the North West.

The North West Road Safety Partnership includes elected representatives along with members from Life After, NIFRS, PSNI, Department for Infrastructure, PCSP, Life Cycles, and Finan Opticians.
