State-of-the-Art Wellness Facilities Set to Open at Derg Valley Leisure Centre
5 January 2026
Excitement is in the air in Castlederg as Derg Valley Leisure Centre officially opens its new, state-of-the-art Wellness Suite - a major enhancement to local health and wellbeing facilities.
The new Wellness Suite at Derg Valley Leisure Centre introduces modern wellness therapies that have not previously been available locally. The facilities include a CryoSpa, infrared therapy cabin, and steam room, providing both members and visitors with access to high-quality recovery, relaxation, and wellbeing experiences.
Designed to cater to a broad range of users, the suite will support athletes seeking enhanced muscle recovery and performance, as well as individuals looking to unwind, de-stress, and improve their overall health. The CryoSpa uses controlled cold therapy to aid muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, and promote circulation. The infrared therapy cabin offers gentle, penetrating heat which may help relieve joint pain, improve circulation, and encourage deep relaxation, while the steam room provides a traditional heat experience known to support respiratory health, detoxification, and stress relief.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, was delighted to launch new facility and said it will be a fantastic asset to the local area.
“The completion of the new Wellness Suite at Derg Valley Leisure Centre is a significant milestone for Castlederg and the wider Derg Valley area. This investment demonstrates a strong commitment to improving health and wellbeing while also delivering modern, high-quality facilities for local residents. The Derg Active Project is helping to drive positive change, and this new suite will ensure people can access excellent wellness services close to home.”
The Wellness Suite will officially opened to the public on Friday 2nd January 2026, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of Derg Valley Leisure Centre.
To coincide with the opening, an enhanced ‘Active Wellness’ membership will be introduced. This membership will include full access to the Wellness Suite facilities and will be available at £39.95 per month by direct debit, with a pay-as-you-go option of £10 per session also offered.
The development forms part of the UK Government–funded Derg Active Project, an ambitious and integrated programme focused on driving economic regeneration, improving health and wellbeing outcomes, and enhancing social and environmental infrastructure within the rural town of Castlederg. The Derg Active Project continues to deliver visible and lasting regeneration within Castlederg, improving quality of life for local residents while creating a more vibrant and attractive town centre for the wider community and visitors.
